As I observe and help individuals and teams, there is one thing that I can bet on: harmful parents making themselves more important than the game being played.
More times than not, there is a parent yelling at their kid as if they do not know how to play the game, or coach them from the stands. Or, there are the parents that force their kids to look as terrible performance and character through rose tinged glasses. Both can be harmful.
Both can keep your athlete from being present in the game. Having an athletes attention in the stand rather than the game is a recipe for disaster with coach, but more importantly, a disaster for their ability to perform effectively.
This who allow their kids to see the sport world through rose tinted glasses, keep them in a place of complacency and halts their ability to feel the need to improve and grow.
All in all, how a parent reacts during game time, has a larger effect on athletes than one believes. If an athletes performance being hurt doesn’t help look for change or help, then know these same unchecked behaviors will potentially lose scholarships down the road.
I help, athletes of all ages, current and retired athletes, elite and rookie athletes, and I also work with the support systems, the parents of the athletes. If you feel that you could use some help shifting mindsets, becoming the elite inner athlete you want to be or become the best support system you could be, reach out to me and lets get you started!
