When working on mental performance for athletes, it is important to consider stage of life as well as the whole lifespan of an athlete.
Becoming the most elite version of your athlete self is not done overnight, and any elite that you talk to or watch in interviews, will tell you it is not achievable without years and years of work.
When working with Malique, the work being done will look differently, when working with a child to a teenager, to a college athelte and a professional athlete. At the same time, there are some overlapping areas that all phases of the athlete will need to work on and consider. Looking into having your athlete join? Consider this:
Children (4-13)
- Focus is on development
- Athlete development
- Building healthy expectations and boundaries around athlete self
- Language development
- Experience-processing ability
- Begin to work on environment to hone healthy athlete development
Teens / Early Adult (13-18)
- Building on athlete development to solid athlete identity
- Learning to use motivations (long term and short term) to help us achieve goals
- Begin working towards ideal athlete self both internally and physically
- Continue to develop language and processing ability for faster recovery of adversity
- Further separation of athlete self and everyday self
- Focus is on applying self to specific goals
College and Professional
- Focus is on mental clarify and clear athlete identification for pristine performance ability
- More solid skills to allow full focus and attention into performance
- Continuing to build on physical skills for enhanced performance
- Clear cut boundaries on athlete self, to prevent burnout and allow enjoyment in other areas of life
- Processing ability becomes immediate and any barriers are quickly worked out and identified
These are just guidelines, meaning that because you identify in one stage you can still work or may need to work on other areas of other stages. Any of these sound like something you or your athlete can work on? Reach out and let’s get started!
