Who and What is Mental Performance and Mental Athlete Mental Health For?

The idea of athletes needing mental health and mental performance support has slowly shifted from “being too tough to engage in these services” to “these services can be used to help and support this one aspect of my life”.

When I speak to groups, when I tell people about the work that I do, it always is followed with the assumption that there has to be something wrong with the athlete to engage in mental health and performance support. That is not always the case. Mental health and mental performance support is just as important as an athlete seeking a trainer to help them become better athletes. It doesn’t mean that they are are terrible athlete for seeking out a trainer, it is a way of enhance your athlete self. The same thing applies to mental health and mental performance for athletes.

Here are some examples of athletes who would benefit from mental health and mental performance support:

  • Athletes with anxiety
  • Athletes who cannot focus
  • Athletes who are refining themselves in their sport
  • Athletes who have a hard time recieving feedback
  • Athletes who have a lot going on, on and off the arena of play (field, court, gym, pool, track and so on)
  • Athletes who want to figure out their next are of growth
  • Athletes who want to build structure around mental and emotional clarity
  • Athletes who feel stuck or plateauing
  • Athletes who need to work on communication
  • Athletes coming back from an injury
  • Athletes making transitions (from middle school to high school, high school to college, college to the pros)
  • Athletes who need to build confidence
  • Athletes who need to build self awareness
  • Athletes who need to develop a better environment around themselves on and off the arena of play

While that is a decent list, it is not the extent of the reasons for athlete to come see me. Athletes are not the only ones who can work with me as well. Athletes need the proper support around them as well as consistency, meaning parent, coaches , trainers and everyone in between who woks with or is involved with athletes can work with me for the benefit of the athlete.
