Vacation Conversation Part 1

As I always do on vacation, I run into conversation about the work I am doing (also practicing my conceptualizing ability). To my luck, I ran into someone who was successful in his own field and very curious about what I do, while a world cup game was going on.

“Why would you involve parents and coaches in your work for an athlete?”

Talking about this in person is a lot better than keeping it short and sweet on LinkedIn and Instagram. This was not a question of pushback but genuine curiousity.

We talked about some of the ways that our parents tried to communicate failures and successes to us, only to find out that communication was not the best. The long frustration based talks in the car after a game, the comparisons to those who are “doing it right”,additional workouts to get it through our heads what we need to do next time and in extreme cases the silent treatment or even punishments until we performed how we were supposed to.

Having this connecting moment, it dawned on him that the overall well being of young atheltes both short and long term is affected by how we are communicated with after failures and successes. Not only does it shape our language, but our perception of ourselves and understanding of the game we play. Not to mention, affects the mental and physical performance as well.

NOW, I am not going to post a novel on here but instead practice a little bit of restaint by posting in parts. If you are interested in the work I am doing, or even curious as my vacation friend was, feel free to give me a follow, interact with me and lets see what we can do to make the athlete world around us more productive than harmful.
