“What is is that you love about the sport?”
The typical answer, has to do with surface level achievement or success. But, for long term involvement and self imposed internal strength and resiliency, we need something stronger than that.
To be able to push past the days that we dont feel like going to practice, after suffering an insulting defeat, facing too harsh of criticism, when we feel stagnant in development. We need something that rewards us, about the sport, rather than than some achievement.
After years of training and maturing, I realized late in my college football career that I LOVE challenging myself when it comes to football. How could I make an impact today? What patterns can I find of my opponent? Can I do more than what is asked of me by my coahces?
I carry that love with me in my recreational sporting life, but also in business and the clients I work with. The sooner an athlete can find that LOVE, the better he/she will be when it comes to the challenges parts of being an athlete.
