One thing that gets questioned and confused when beginning communication work with athletes and parents is that I am ONLY saying we need to speak in a therapeutic tone.
That is NOT the case by far.
Sometimes, parents will need to shift their tone to fit the situation. Athletes will inevitably come across a coach who operate with passion, that can be mistaken for hyper-aggressiveness.
The point of communication work is for parents to learn how to speak to the athlete (and for athletes to learn how to receive communication) after any given experience. We find the current understanding of tone and body language, and build it from there so that when they do come across a coach who is yelling or using specific language, the athlete does not find themselves attacked but rather they have the ability to understand that real meaning of communication and still play to their best ability.
Some of the best coaches in history studied and focused on communication with their athletes, so focusing on communication at home to build healthier and more resilient athletes should be a staple of athlete work with me.
